Tree reduction is cutting a tree back to a smaller, safer size while keeping its natural shape and health, rather than removing it. Should you reduce or remove an overgrown tree?

Reduction is the right call when the tree is healthy and worth keeping but has simply got too big, is blocking light or a view, or is crowding a structure. Removal is the right call when the tree is dead, dying, unsafe at the base, or in the wrong place entirely. A big, healthy tree is usually worth reducing rather than losing.

Will crown reduction damage my tree or make it look butchered?

Will it harm the tree?

Not when it's done properly. Reduction done to arboricultural standard, cutting the right amount at the right points, at the right time of year, keeps the tree healthy and lets it heal cleanly. What harms trees is “topping”: hacking the top off hard and leaving stubs. We don't do that.

Will it look butchered?

No. A proper reduction keeps the tree's natural outline, just smaller and tidier. This is where an arborist's skill really shows, and it's what Justin is known for.
