What is hedge trimming?

Hedge trimming is cutting a hedge back to a clean, even shape and a controlled size, so it stays healthy, dense and tidy rather than growing wild. Tree Tenders trim hedges across Whangārei and Northland, from low formal borders to tall boundary screens. A well-trimmed hedge holds its shape, grows thicker, and does its job of privacy, shelter or looks without taking over.

How often should you trim a hedge in Northland?

Most formal hedges want trimming two to three times a year, and fast growers more than that. Light, regular trims beat one hard cut a year: the hedge stays denser, holds its shape and never gets that scalped look. Northland's mild, wet growing season means hedges here put on more growth than in colder parts of the country, so they often need an extra trim.

[ 03 — Bringing it back ]

Can you cut an overgrown hedge back hard, and will it grow back?

Will it grow back?

Usually, yes. Most common Northland hedge species, griselinia, pittosporum, laurel and photinia among them, take a hard restoration cut well and reshoot thick and healthy, as long as it's done at the right time of year.

The one exception

Conifers like macrocarpa and leylandii: cut those back into bare, brown wood and they won't reshoot. Justin reads the species and the state of the hedge and tells you straight what it will and won't come back from before any cutting starts.

Hedge trimming: common questions

What's the difference between hedge trimming and pruning?

Trimming keeps a hedge to a set shape and size with regular even cuts across the whole face. Pruning is more selective branch work, often on individual trees or shrubs. A hedge wants trimming to stay dense and sharp; a specimen tree usually wants pruning or reduction. Most hedge jobs are straight trimming.

How often should my hedge be trimmed?

Most formal hedges want two to three trims a year, fast growers a bit more, and native or informal hedges as little as once or twice. Northland's long growing season pushes that up a little. Regular light trims keep a hedge denser and tidier than one hard annual cut.

When is the best time of year to trim a hedge in NZ?

For most hedges, late spring after the first flush of growth and again in late summer works well, with a light tidy before winter. Timing shifts by species, and a few have specific windows. Justin will tell you the best timing for your hedge at the assessment.

How much does hedge trimming cost in Northland?

It's priced per job, based on the hedge's length and height, how easy it is to access, and how much needs to come off. A regular, well-kept hedge is a quicker job than one that's badly overgrown. You'll get a free, no-obligation quote before any work starts.

Can you trim a really tall hedge?

Yes. Tall hedges over two or three metres just need the right height access gear, which we bring. We trim them to an even line safely from a controlled position, whether it's a boundary screen or a big established hedge.

My hedge is badly overgrown, can it be saved?

Usually. Most Northland hedge species take a hard restoration cut and reshoot thick and healthy when it's done at the right time. Conifers like macrocarpa are the exception, as they won't reshoot from bare wood. Justin will tell you what your hedge will come back from before any cutting.

Do you take away the clippings?

Yes. We chip, mulch or stack the clippings to suit you, then rake and leave the site clean. Just let Justin know at the quote how you'd like the green waste handled.
