What is tree felling?

Tree felling is cutting a whole tree down in one controlled drop, rather than taking it apart in sections. Tree Tenders fell trees across Whangārei and Northland wherever there's clear space to lay one down safely, on paddocks, lifestyle blocks and open sections. Where a tree stands tight against a house, shed or power line, we dismantle it in pieces instead.

[ 01 — Is felling right for your tree? ]

When should a tree be felled whole?

Felling is the quickest, cleanest option when there's room to drop the tree. It usually suits:

No clear drop zone, or a tree standing close to the house, a shed or power lines? That's a controlled dismantle, not a fell. Storm-damaged or leaning and need it down fast? That's an emergency callout.

  • Open space around the tree to lay it down safely

  • Rural sections, lifestyle blocks and farm paddocks

  • Shelter trees, pines or gums that have had their day

  • Clearing a line for a new build, fence or driveway

  • Dead or dying trees with space to fall

  • Several trees to bring down in one area

[ 02 — How we do it ]

How does Tree Tenders fell a tree safely?

A clean fell is all about reading the tree before a single cut, then setting exactly where it lands. Here's how a job runs:

1

Free on-site assessment and quote

Justin looks at the tree, the ground and the space around it, then gives you a firm price.

2

Read the tree

We check the lean, the wind, the escape routes and the drop zone before a single cut.

3

Directional felling cuts

A precise notch and back-cut, with wedges or a rope where needed, sets the direction of the fall.

4

Drop it clean

The tree comes down inside the planned zone, right where we want it.

5

Limb, ring and chip

We cut it down to size, ring the timber and chip the rest.

6

Rake and tidy

We rake and leave the site clean.

Tree felling vs dismantling: which do you need?

Same tree gone, two different methods. The short version: if there's clear, safe space to lay the tree down, that's felling. If it's tight against buildings, fences or power lines, that's a controlled dismantle.

[ 04 — Cost & consent ]

What does tree felling cost, and do you need council consent?

How much does tree felling cost?

Felling is priced per job. The price depends on the tree's size and species, how easy it is to get to, and how much clearing up you want afterwards. A straight fell with a clear drop zone is usually quicker, and often cheaper, than a sectional dismantle. You'll get a free quote first, with no obligation.

Do you need council consent to fell a tree?

Most private trees on private land in Whangārei can be felled without council consent. The exceptions are protected or notable trees, and some district-plan rules in certain zones. Justin flags anything like that at the assessment, so you're never caught out.

Tree felling: common questions

What's the difference between felling and removing a tree?

+
Felling drops the whole tree in one controlled fall, which needs clear space around it. Removal, or dismantling, takes the tree down in sections and lowers each piece on ropes, which is what we do near houses, sheds and power lines. Same tree gone, two different methods.

How do you control which way the tree falls?

+
We read the lean and the wind first, then make a directional notch and back-cut that sets the fall. Wedges or a rope guide it if needed. It's qualified, insured work, and the drop zone is planned before any cutting starts.

Can you fell trees on a farm or lifestyle block?

+
Yes, rural and paddock work is core to what we do. Shelter belts, pines, gums and multiple trees in one area are all standard jobs. Open space is exactly where felling makes the most sense.

How much does it cost to fell a tree in Northland?

+
It's priced per job, based on size, species, access and clean-up. A fell with a clear drop zone is usually quicker, and often cheaper, than a sectional dismantle. You'll get a free, no-obligation quote before anything happens.

What happens to the tree after it's felled?

+
We limb it, ring the timber for firewood if you want it, and chip or mulch the rest. Alternatively, it can be placed on a burn pile. The site is raked and left tidy. If you'd like the stump ground out too, ask and we'll sort it.

Do I need council consent to fell a tree?

+
Usually not for a private tree on private land in Whangārei. Protected or notable trees, and some district-plan zones, are the exception. Justin checks for anything like that at the assessment so there are no surprises.
