What is tree removal and when do you need it?

Signs a tree needs to come out

Some trees can be saved with a trim. Others have to go. It's usually time to remove a tree when:

Not sure it needs to go completely? Sometimes a tree-reduction does the job instead. Justin will tell you straight at the free quote, even if it's a smaller fix than you feared.

  • It's dead, dying or diseased and won't recover

  • It's leaning, split or unstable after wind or storms

  • Roots are lifting a path, driveway or foundation

  • It's grown too close to the house, shed or power lines

  • Storm damage has left hanging limbs or a partial fall

  • It's blocking a build, a driveway or a subdivision

  • It's outgrown its spot and keeps dropping limbs

How does Tree Tenders remove a tree safely?

Removal near buildings and power isn't about brute force, it's about control. Here's how a job runs:

1

Free on-site assessment and quote

Justin looks at the tree, the access and the risks, then gives you a firm price.

2

Plan the job

Access, rigging points and drop zones are worked out before a chainsaw starts.

3

Dismantle in controlled sections

Near structures the tree comes down piece by piece, not in one drop.

4

Lower limbs on ropes

Heavy branches are rigged and lowered, not dropped, when there's a roof, fence or line below.

5

Chip, ring and clear

Branches are chipped, timber is ringed, everything is gathered up.

6

Leave it tidy

The site is raked and cleared before we go, and the clean-up is quoted in the price, never added on afterwards.

"Justin is a master at his craft. Every movement, cut and drop is controlled and intentional."

Tree removal vs tree felling vs reduction

Not every big tree job is a removal. The short version: if the tree has to go and it's near buildings, that's removal. If it has room to drop in one piece, that's felling. If it just needs to be smaller or healthier, that's reduction.

[ 04 — Cost & consent ]

What does tree removal cost, and do you need council consent?

How much does tree removal cost?

There's no flat rate, and anyone who quotes one sight unseen is guessing. Price depends on the tree's size, how easy it is to reach and what's underneath it — a tree over a driveway takes more rigging than one in an open paddock. You get a firm, free quote first, with no obligation to go ahead.

Do you need council consent to remove a tree?

Usually not. Most trees on private land in the Whangārei district can be removed without consent. The exceptions are protected or notable trees listed in the district plan, and some rules near waterways or reserves. Justin flags anything that needs checking at the assessment, so you're not caught out.

Tree removal — common questions

How much does tree removal cost in Whangārei?

+
It's priced per job, not off a set rate. The main factors are the tree's size, how hard it is to access and what's below it, since a tree over a roof or driveway needs more rigging than one in the open. You get a firm, free quote before any work starts.

Do I need council consent to remove a tree?

+
Most private trees on private land in the Whangārei district don't need consent. Protected or notable trees in the district plan are the exception, along with some rules near waterways and reserves. Justin will flag anything worth checking at the free assessment.

Can you remove a tree close to my house or power lines?

+
Removal depends on proximity to the lines. Justin will assess this at the time of the quote.

Do you remove the stump as well?

+
Just let us know when you get your quote. Removing or grinding the stump is quoted with the job so you get one clear price, rather than a surprise afterwards.

What happens to the wood and branches?

+
Whatever suits you. Branches are chipped, and the mulch can stay for your garden or go with us. Timber can be ringed and stacked as firewood or taken away. Either way the site is raked and tidy before we leave.

Are you insured if something goes wrong?

+
Fully. Tree Tenders carries public liability insurance and Justin is a qualified arborist, so a removal near your home is covered and done to standard. It's the difference between a professional job and a mate with a chainsaw.
