What is tree removal and when do you need it?
Tree removal means taking a whole tree down, dismantled in controlled sections when it stands near a house, shed or power line. Across Whangārei and Northland, Tree Tenders removes trees that are dead, diseased, storm-damaged, unstable or growing too close to a building. Fully qualified, insured, and the site left tidy.
Signs a tree needs to come out
Some trees can be saved with a trim. Others have to go. It's usually time to remove a tree when:
Not sure it needs to go completely? Sometimes a tree-reduction does the job instead. Justin will tell you straight at the free quote, even if it's a smaller fix than you feared.
It's dead, dying or diseased and won't recover
It's leaning, split or unstable after wind or storms
Roots are lifting a path, driveway or foundation
It's grown too close to the house, shed or power lines
Storm damage has left hanging limbs or a partial fall
It's blocking a build, a driveway or a subdivision
It's outgrown its spot and keeps dropping limbs
How does Tree Tenders remove a tree safely?
Removal near buildings and power isn't about brute force, it's about control. Here's how a job runs:
Free on-site assessment and quote
Justin looks at the tree, the access and the risks, then gives you a firm price.
Plan the job
Access, rigging points and drop zones are worked out before a chainsaw starts.
Dismantle in controlled sections
Near structures the tree comes down piece by piece, not in one drop.
Lower limbs on ropes
Heavy branches are rigged and lowered, not dropped, when there's a roof, fence or line below.
Chip, ring and clear
Branches are chipped, timber is ringed, everything is gathered up.
Leave it tidy
The site is raked and cleared before we go, and the clean-up is quoted in the price, never added on afterwards.

Tree removal vs tree felling vs reduction
Not every big tree job is a removal. The short version: if the tree has to go and it's near buildings, that's removal. If it has room to drop in one piece, that's felling. If it just needs to be smaller or healthier, that's reduction.
| You're hereTree removal | ServiceTree felling | ServiceTree reduction | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | Dismantled in controlled sections | Dropped in one planned fall | Canopy reshaped and reduced |
| Best when | The tree must go, near structures | The tree must go, open space around it | The tree stays, just smaller or safer |
| Typical setting | Suburban yards, close to houses/power | Farms, lifestyle blocks, paddocks | Healthy trees blocking light or views |

What does tree removal cost, and do you need council consent?
How much does tree removal cost?
There's no flat rate, and anyone who quotes one sight unseen is guessing. Price depends on the tree's size, how easy it is to reach and what's underneath it — a tree over a driveway takes more rigging than one in an open paddock. You get a firm, free quote first, with no obligation to go ahead.
Do you need council consent to remove a tree?
Usually not. Most trees on private land in the Whangārei district can be removed without consent. The exceptions are protected or notable trees listed in the district plan, and some rules near waterways or reserves. Justin flags anything that needs checking at the assessment, so you're not caught out.
Why do locals choose Tree Tenders for tree removal?

Justin is a fully qualified arborist with 12+ years' experience, fully insured with public liability cover, and known for calm, controlled work at height, in wind and around power. You get a fast quote, a start date that sticks and a site left tidy, every time. Meet Justin.
